Ebisu is a specialist in the private training of ninja, and uses this skill to tutor Konohamaru in general ninja abilities. He initially dislikes Naruto Uzumaki since he only sees him as the container of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox, though after seeing the positive influence Naruto has on Konohamaru he begins to have a change of heart. Still, Ebisu doesn't approve of the perverted jutsu Naruto uses and then teaches to Konohamaru, though has himself fallen prey to Naruto's perverted jutsu, causing Naruto to often refer to him as the "closet pervert" because of this. In Part II, Ebisu is put in charge of a Genin team with Konohamaru and his two friends as its members.

Series creator Masashi Kishimoto has stated that he likes Ebisu's design because it reminds him of himself.
